This is a page that no one wants to have or to use but I was always brought up with the saying "where you have livestock you have dead stock"

Unfortunately I have the need to use this page as last year (summer 06) I lost my first mini.
She was my first, my love, my "Crabby Chicken".Slievecroob Silver Moon

Silver had a fabulous way of making all the other horses think she was the boss, even with the two legged people. She really was the matriarchal mare and kept everyone in line, leading the way and keeping watch over all. Dare a stallion make any unwelcome move toward the herd!! When it came time to catch her it was on "her terms" and you always had to follow the same pattern, until she established (usually in front of everyone there), who was "the boss". Her nick name was Crabby Chicken and it really suited her in the herd, but put her on her own with only human contact and you couldn't get a sweeter mare. She really did love people she just didn't like to admit it to the others.
Silver was a very proud mum and was never happier than when she had a foal at foot. On the years she didn't have a foal of her own she would try to steal one.
Our girl foaled for the last time on July 6th 06 and had a beautiful tiny Colt, Kwaimoon First Edition.  Spencer was only three weeks old when we noticed Silver not quite herself. She was holding her head to one side and had a swelling under her keel.
Silver was taken to the vets and tests were started. It was found that she was in heart and liver failure. She was treated very agressively with antibiotics and other necessary medication but is was of no avail. After three days I knew she wasn't going to make it. I hugged her and told her it was alright to go and I promised to look after her little man for her. She didn't want to. She fought for dear life, hanging in there for her baby. I do believe if she hadn't had a foal at foot she would have given up long before.
Silver was very quietly and gently put to sleep. The last favour I could do for an old friend!
